Symptoms as a Message in Classical Homeopathy

We have come to see the symptoms of our body and mind as troublesome issues that we would like to go away. Conventional medicine will offer you a pill or medicine to make the symptoms go away.  I have a headache, I am going to take some aspririn.  Classical Homeopathy sees it differenty.  If we stop ourselves for a moment and ask, why do I have these symptoms, why do I feel this way, we begin to see that they are there for a reason.  Our symptoms are telling us something about ourselves.  They are telling us about what is going on in our body.  They are the messages of the vital force, or energy, of the body.  For a homeopath, these symptoms are like a road map to the core of a person, telling them what is needed to heal.  It is much easier to ignore our symptoms as much as possible, to take a  ‘pill’ and make them go away.  But often this ‘pill’ only serves to mask the symptoms from our consciousness, doing nothing towards the actual healing of the condition.  What’s more, it allows us to forget that there is a problem in the first place, until it pops up again.  This time the aspririn or the extra strength pain medication won’t touch the pain.  Inevitably this is in a more extreme version than initially.  But this is the body is simply asking to be heard, to be listened to, but the reaction after suppressive drugs can be violent.  ‘Can you hear me now?’ it says.  ‘I am trying to tell you something!’  For a homeopath, these symptoms are seen as a blessing, a direct route to the truth of the inner disturbance–a road map to the correct remedy that will stimulate deep healing, leading us to forget about the problem because it has been cured, not because it has just been hidden.  For the individual, it is healing in itself to just sit down and talk with a homeopath about the symptoms.  It is giving the messages of the body a voice, allowing them to be heard.  It is paying attention to the inner most parts of the self.  Often, simply making an appointment with a homeopath, who you know will really listen to you and your body, can start the healing process.  It is empowering to listen to the messages.  It is taking your health into your own hands, not handing it over to the conventional system to take care of.  The individual seeking homeopathic care is saying:  ‘I am listening.  I hear your plea.  The symptoms of you, my body, show me the inherent power of potential self healing that we have.’
